Food, Nutrition and Consumerism
Class Presentation to
RI Elementary School
Press Release written by Kristen B. - 4th Grade Teacher:
"Tomorrow the fourth grade students of SMHQES will be enlighted by a
group of culinary students from Somerset Berkley Regional High School. These two
communities will come together to learn from each other about the
benefits of nutrition, organic practices, and healthy life choices.
The Somerset students who composed the day's lessons, will use the
presentations as part of their final exam. However, in return, they
are recieving something more valuable from this experience than a
grade; an opportunity to reach out to a younger audience and make an
impact putting the skills they have been learning into a real life
situation. Prior to all of this, the students of SMHQES have been
challenged this year by investigating a yearlong unit created by the
fourth grade team involving how to Go Green. This unit is directly
correlated to their science curriculum, while addressing the choices
they make for themselves and the planet. These young fourth graders
will now be able to apply the knowledge they have gained in their unit
of study to three interactive programs the high school students have
developed. Through the use of technology, discussion, and hands on
collaboration the students will walk away with a greater knowledge and
appreciation of the food we eat and how it affects our own health and
that of our planet. "
Words of praise from the fourth grade teachers:"It really made for an awesome and unique experience for the kids and us. Your students were a lot of fun to watch work with our kids. They had a nice rapport and banter with each other as well, which made for a familiar scene. :) " - Rob
"Thank you so much for Friday. The kids loved it and they were able to take away a lot from the experience. Thanks ... for all the time it took to plan and coordinate the day. " - Stephanie
